Great night, well hosted and talented people there. Really enjoyed it and definitely will go again.
Best Wednesday night out in London for years--quality acts, good sound and very well hosted.
What a well run evening and very well worth paying to get in. Great venue, friendly crowd and the stage, pa and professionalism of everyone makes it a pleasure to sitback and watch the tremendous talent that show up week after week. Congratulations Bullet Bar and AJS music.
Hi Aaron, Re: last week and Gary Phelan, Just wanted to let you know what a well run evening you organize. At last I have found a promoter that does things the right way. The bar was busy, Sound was good, the atmosphere was great and you were approachable. Most recently all I have experienced are promoters that donít really care about what they do, and venues that have no decent sound engineer or backline (that I normally have to provide for all bands even though its not my night!). Anyway, well done mate, will recommend your night to as many of the decent acts and managers that I know.
Played here on Wednesday, not withstanding one or two issues with the pa, and I'm not blaming the sound engineer who did a marvelous job, it was a good night, great atmosphere wonderful appreciative audience, friendly staff. Being more used to playing quiet settings the club environment was different experience. Should non performers pay to enter? Place was packed, speaks volumes! Keep up the good work.
My opinion: Open Mic = Free to get in
I definately have to say that you should NOT have to pay to attend an open mic night.....!!!...Yeah it costs money to put on a night Aaron BUT bet ya make a load more back in the drinks we all buy....I suggest voluntary donation is best.....oh and Vimtokid, not every artist IS worth the money and we all have different tastes eh...if we are expected to pay then shouldn't we expect a listing of the artists and music to expect before arriving....!!!...I think Steve is spot on....besides who cares if he did lie to get in...ace...way to go.....many (now famous) artists stole to make their way....well...that's all the time i'm wastin on this matter.....
Blagged his way in - he lied then. Had every intention of performing...... What's all this about? Music is not, or should not be, a competition it's meant to be fun folks. Have you forgotten that Mr Steve? I have had more than several good nights here. I have had fun. I have NERVER seen anyone in leather trousers - must have been one of those weeks when I wasn't there. If it's not for you because you deserve better, that's fine, just go somewhere that's better in your judgement, but don't slag this place off unreasonably. Generally speaking it's a good night. It has it's moments, but that's Open Mike for you, it's a risky business. Relax and take yourself and your music a little less seriously you'll enjoy it more - unless you are hoping to be discovered and become rich and famous.
Well, its good to hear you stand up for the place, respect for that. Oh, but I didn't cheat my way in...I had every intention of performing but didn't get around to it. My mate paid though and he was annoyed about it. But lets put this matter to rest, good luck. Promote away...

We do not charge musicians that play and if you book ahead it is only £2 which is how we reward our regulars. £4 is nothing to hear 10-20 acts plus 2 featured acts and myself all of which are a high standard plus the bar shuts at midnight. Why are you complaining when you cheated your way in? "I'd pay that to watch acts at the Green Note, or 12bar, but not this horrible venue that's obviously designed for people in leather trousers." Every comment on the venue has been positive and the acts that play regualry at all of Londons venues including the ones you mentioned have said that it is one of the best venues around for this type of night. "Secondly, before and during peoples sets they played some awful music, drum and bass or something daft like that. It totally killed the atmosphere and I thought showed a lack of respect and understanding for the kind of people that enjoy acoustic live music!" This music was played once while we changed an act over that would have taken too long to change with silence, this is subjective but I do not feel it was unsuitable... "Oh, and another thing...what the hell was with the 2quid entrance if you were "industry". Gents - its not going to happen and it doesn't make your night look prestige." This is to attract industry to our night to help benefit the venue and the performers, we have already had industry down to our night. I hope this answers your points and I hope that everyone will come down to check out my night at the Bullet Bar, we have alot of talented performers every week and it is becoming a fantastic platform for new AND established performers on the circuit. All comments and suggestions are welcome.
Fair enough I suppose, I wasn't trying to undermine the featured artists, especially if I didn't watch them. I'll withdraw that. Aside from that I'll stick to my guns on the money thing. Like I said, there are several wonderful venues, especially in Camden, where you can watch a whole evening of featured artists, top standard, the whole night, without having to sit through the bad stuff- I think its a question of VALUE FOR MONEY. Promoters need to think of others before themselves...i.e. the artists and the crowd. These quality nights are also done in the sprirt of live music, with suitable music before, and after the acts, with a room that lends itself to live music and a whole attitude that doesn't get above itself (the industry 2quid "thing"). I have never done this sort of thing, and am certainly not the complaining type but I just felt it was a genuine swindle. If you enjoyed yourself thats cool, I'm glad, but with so many open mikes and singers nights in London its important to keep the standard high....the music, the promoters and the venues. There are so many nights that undermine the sprirt of live music, that take artists for a ride and rip off audiences, its not fair. Don't settle for anything less than excellence...if its the venues fault, the promoters should move on. If its the promoters' fault then I guess there's nothing I can do except be a biligerant, self important complainer. My apologies for that.
I don't like to play favourites when it comes to venues and open mics, but I must take issue with Steve's comments below. I don't think it's at all absurd to pay to see live music. I was at the Bullet last night and I found the majority of the open miccers pretty entertaining and the featued artists were certainly not middle of the road and I think were well worth a cover charge. I had a top time at the Bullet and will definitely be going back.

I'd pay that to watch acts at the Green Note, or 12bar, but not this horrible venue that's obviously designed for people in leather trousers. I lied and said I was playing just so I didn't have to fork out. Secondly, before and during peoples sets they played some awful music, drum and bass or something daft like that. It totally killed the atmosphere and I thought showed a lack of respect and understanding for the kind of people that enjoy acoustic live music! The standard was normal for an open mike I suppose, but we didn't stick around for the featured artists. Oh, and another thing...what the hell was with the 2quid entrance if you were "industry". Gents - its not going to happen and it doesn't make your night look prestige. I really didn't enjoy thje whole affair, but then again....I don't HAVE to go again do I...phew!
